Point Break Remake Adds Ray Winstone

I don't think too many people are excited for the upcoming Point Break remake. Not only will it change certain elements of the plot, but nothing about the film so far sounds even remotely promising. Today, we're receiving news that does make me slightly more optimistic about the project, but isn't enough to completely sway my opinion.

I don’t think too many people are excited for the upcoming Point Break remake. Not only will it change certain elements of the plot, but nothing about the film so far sounds even remotely promising. Today, we’re receiving news that does make me slightly more optimistic about the project, but isn’t enough to completely sway my opinion.

Variety is reporting that Ray Winstone will be joining the upcoming remake in the role that Gary Busey took in the original, that of Johnny Utah’s older partner. The actor will co-star alongside Luke Bracey and Gerard Butler in the Ericson Core-directed film.

Kurt Wimmer’s script is said to follow the same premise as the original, with Bracey and Butler set to star as FBI agent Johnny Utah and “new-age” criminal Bodhi, respectively. Unlike Bigelow’s version though, it won’t be set against the California surfing scene. Instead, the remake will be set in the world of extreme sports.

Winstone is coming off a strong turn in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah and is a charismatic actor who can chew scenery with the best of them, which should bode well for Point Break. His involvement definitely has me excited but again, I still don’t know how I feel about this one.

We don’t really need a remake of Point Break and considering the very high standard that the original set, I don’t know how this version could possibly do it justice. Butler and Bracey in the lead roles don’t inspire much confidence, either, and that fear is only elevated when I look at Core behind the camera and Wimmer (the man behind the Total Recall remake) penning the script. It’s not a very promising team of talent, that’s for sure, but I’m still hopeful that we’ll all end up being surprised with what Alcon Entertainment is cooking up for us.

Tell us, does Ray Winstone’s involvement in the Point Break remake have you more excited for it?
