Pierce Brosnan Doesn’t Think That He Was A Good James Bond

Though not the best James Bond, Pierce Brosnan was far from the worst. In fact, I count Goldeneye as one of my favorite films of the franchise and was always a big fan of the actor's portrayal of the iconic character. It turns out that not everyone feels that way though, as Brosnan himself says that he can't even watch his 007 films as he doesn't think that they were "good enough."

Though not the best James Bond, Pierce Brosnan was far from the worst. In fact, I count Goldeneye as one of my favorite films of the franchise and was always a big fan of the actor’s portrayal of the iconic character. It turns out that not everyone feels that way though, as Brosnan himself says that he can’t even watch his 007 films as he doesn’t think that they were “good enough.”

“I felt I was caught in a time warp between Roger and Sean…It was a very hard one to grasp the meaning of, for me. The violence was never real, the brute force of the man was never palpable. It was quite tame, and the characterization didn’t have a follow-through of reality, it was surface. But then that might have had to do with my own insecurities in playing him as well,” said the actor.

While I understand what he’s saying, I think that Brosnan is being a bit too hard on himself here. Sure, it’s easy to say this now that we’ve seen Daniel Craig and films like Casino Royale and Skyfall, but still, it was a different time for the franchise back when Brosnan was playing the character and the films didn’t have that gritty realism to them yet. Honestly, I think that the actor did just fine in the role and his outings with 007, while they might have been a bit campy, were still very enjoyable.
