Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly made quite the cinematic duo in Adam McKay’s hit comedies Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Step Brothers. Now, Deadline reports that they’ll be doing it again with Border Guards, written by Jesse Armstrong (Peep Show, In The Loop).
The film, which is being set up at Sony, will focus on “two hapless but earnest friends who decide to give purpose to their lives, by protecting America’s borders from illegal immigrants.” Eventually, they wind up getting themselves stranded in Mexico without identification and must sneak back into the United States.
The plot suggests the same goofiness that we’ve come to expect from Ferrell and Reilly, and Armstrong’s involvement suggests that Border Guards may come packaged with some social commentary, surrounding the topical issues of immigration and American politics.
In any case, it’s great to see that Ferrell and Reilly will be sharing some screen time again, even if it’s not in that Step Brothers sequel that we were all hoping for. McKay recently said that he wasn’t going to do any more sequels and instead wanted to focus on “new characters in a new world,” so maybe Border Guards could be his first step in that direction.
