Fox has released the final trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past tonight and despite giving us our best look at the film yet, I must say, it left me a bit confused. We get to see Wolverine going back in time to assemble a team of mutants, but with all the jumping between timelines, it’s easy to get lost in what looks to be a complex narrative. Almost all of the characters show up here (even new additions like Quicksilver and Bishop ), but it’s a bit hard to keep track of it all and make sense of what’s going on.
From what we know, Wolvie is sent back in time to the 1970s and must prevent Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) and his mutant-hunting sentinels from taking over the world. This is where he encounters the younger versions of characters like Professor X and Magento. Eventually, both sets of mutants (young and old) must join together in order to change the past and save their future. Or at least, that’s what my understanding of what the plot is.
Of course, this is only a trailer, and I’m sure that the tricky time travel story will be handled a lot better in the film. Director Bryan Singer knows what he’s dealing with here and despite the fact that some people think that X-Men: Days of Future Past might just crumble under the weight of its own ambition, I’m fairly certain that it will turn out to be just as impressive as First Class was.
Fox has a huge film on their hands with this sequel, as it’s reportedly the most expensive comic book movie ever made. It’s not likely that they’ll drop the ball, especially since X-Men: Apocalypse is already being planned. I’m sure that a lot of thought has gone into this whole time travelling business and I’m not at all worried about the plot being lost on audiences when the film releases.
