Zooey Deschanel and Anton Yelchin have been added to the cast of The Driftless Area, an upcoming dark comedy from Unified Pictures and Bron Studios. Based on Tom Drury’s novel of the same name, the script for the film was written by Drury and Zachary Sluser, who will also be directing.

The Driftless Area will follow Pierre (Yelchin), a quiet bartender who goes back to his hometown after his parents die. There, he meets the mysterious Stella (Deschanel) and falls madly in love with her. Unfortunately for him, that means he’s unwittingly sucked into a circle of fate which ultimately pits him against a volatile criminal (John Hawkes).

I know that current popular opinion is split on Deschanel, since some people don’t buy into the whole adorkable act, but I’m a fan of just about everything she’s ever done. With New Girl taking up a good chunk of her time, she hasn’t been in as many movies lately, so I’m definitely excited to hear that she’s lining a new project up. As for Yelchin, I’m not too familiar with his work outside of Star Trek, but this should be a welcome chance for him to showcase his chops alongside a talented cast.

The Driftless Area will also star Ciaran Hinds and Alia Shawkat, and shooting is set to begin on May 14 in Vancouver.
