Though he’s keeping pretty busy with the several Avatar sequels that are currently in production, James Cameron is taking a bit of a break from the world of blue people to bring us an underwater adventure in the form of James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D. The doc will have the director in a starring role, with John Bruno, Andrew Wright and Ray Quint sitting behind the camera.

The film will follow Cameron and his crew as they attempt to reach Challenger Deep, which is known as the deepest part of the ocean. Apparently, this was the first extensive expedition that attempted to reach Challenger Deep and included 13 dives. Along the way, 68 new species were identified and on March 26, 2012, the expedition culminated in Cameron’s solo dive, which took him 35,787 feet below the surface of the ocean.

It sounds like a pretty thrilling journey, and I’m actually quite excited to see it brought to life on film, especially with someone like James Cameron involved. He’s been fascinated with the ocean for a long time, and is quite accomplished in the field. No one in filmmaking knows how to shoot underwater better than him, and coupled with his expertise in IMAX 3D, Deepsea Challenge should present us with some truly fascinating images of a part of our world that no one has ever really seen. As someone who loves these types of documentaries, I cannot wait to see what Cameron has in store for us.

Disruptive LA will be distributing James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D on August 8th, 2014.
