Elisabeth Moss has signed on for the lead role in horror flick, There Are Monsters. The Mad Men star will suffer untold terror under the direction of The Strangers‘ Bryan Bertino, based on his original script. American Hustle‘s Richard Suckle is set to produce.

Moss is slated to lead the cast in the tale of a mother and daughter who are “trapped and tormented by a mysterious creature.” Two people at the mercy of a terrifying monster? Count us in! Bertino is no stranger (ahem) to throwing poor unsuspecting sorts into sticky situations. His breakout hit The Strangers, itself a sort-of remake of French chiller Them, put the willies up cinemagoers with a fear of masks before The Purge was a one-line pitch.

As the news emerged, Bertino expanded on his love of the dark:

“I love telling stories about fear – fear of the unknown and fear of the things inside us. Horror can cut through the complexities of life and force us to find something deeper within ourselves. What do we really care about in life? Fear can show us.”

His long-gestating project, Mockingbird (no relation whatsoever to The Hunger Games), has long since completed shooting yet still awaits release. The story for which is genius, according to the one-liner on iMDB: “A couple are given a camera and a set of instructions which they must follow or else someone will die.” Why has this yet to be released?! With the horror genre making further steps into chills over gore in recent years, Bertino’s work has got a built-in audience.

Either way, it’ll be an absolute hoot to see TV drama knockout Moss, who blew it out of the water in Jane Campion’s mini-series Top Of The Lake and continues to battle on as Peggy Olson in AMC’s Mad Men, scream her lungs out.

There Are Monsters is expected to land buyers at Cannes – with a tentative production start date sometime this autumn. Excited?
