It’s impossible to talk about a new movie starring Philip Seymour Hoffman without taking a moment to mourn the loss of this fantastic actor. Hoffman died at the young age of 46 earlier this year, and all we have left are the wonderful performances he has given us over the course of his career. Thankfully, we can still see him in a handful of movies that are releasing over the next couple of months, with God’s Pocket being one of them.
The film is currently available on VOD, as well as in a handful of art house theaters across the country. If for some reason you haven’t seen it yet though, today we have a new clip to share with you that will help to provide a taste as to what this one is all about.
Based on the Peter Dexter novel of the same name, God’s Pocket tells the story of Mickey Scarpato (played by Hoffman), whose step-son has been killed in a manner that was supposed to look like an accident, with Mickey hoping to bury the bad news with the body. But things take a turn for the worse when the boy’s mother demands answers and a local columnist starts sniffing around for the truth. Suddenly, Mickey finds himself in a life-and-death struggle with a body he can’t bury, a wife he can’t please, and a debt he can’t pay.
God’s Pocket was directed by Mad Men star John Slattery, who has helmed several episodes of the hit AMC drama, but has never directed a feature film before. It premiered at Sundance earlier this year to decidedly mixed reviews, but much praise has been given to Hoffman’s performance. In the clip below, we get a good look at the actor in action, as he tells a rather unpleasant story about a horse at a racetrack, the type of story you would not want to share at a dinner party.
