After an assortment of leaks essentially spoiled the news, NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon officially announced Mortal Kombat X. The latest entry in the long running series will be coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC in 2015.
Although the debut trailer for Mortal Kombat X is disappointingly CGI only, NetherRealm did reveal some intriguing new features for the series. For starters, online play will be a major factor as the fighter will apparently feature a “persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy.” Gamers will also be able to tweak their combatants fighting styles and strategy, which is a first for the franchise.
After several disappointing entries in the series (Mortal Kombat: Deception, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon), the ultra violent franchise returned to form with 2011’s reboot Mortal Kombat. That title, which achieved both commercial and critical success, helped pave the way for NetherRealm Studios’ fellow acclaimed fighter, Injustice: Gods Among Us last year.
As someone who grew up playing the original Mortal Kombat titles, because apparently my parents didn’t care what games I played, I found myself continually frustrated by the later entries in the series. Half-baked features and silly new characters led to Mortal Kombat being far behind other fighting franchises when it came to quality. Prior to the 2011 reboot, arguably the only good entry in the series following the original three, was the adventure spin-off Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. However, with the series now back on top, hopefully the good and gory times can continue once again.
More information on Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to be revealed at next week’s E3 show.
