Fresh off her incredible turn in this summer’s comedy hit Neighbors, actress Rose Byrne has become very in-demand. So it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Byrne’s Neighbors producers (Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures, Good Universe) and studio (Universal) are keenly interested in working with her again, and as soon as possible. Although, the part that they have in mind for her may surprise you. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Byrne is being eyed for a supporting role in a film called The Something, about astronauts who end up lost in space.
We don’t know a lot about The Something, but Rodney Rothman (a former writer for Late Show With David Letterman) is lined up to direct. Point Grey, Good Universe and Universal want Byrne to come aboard as the love interest, described as someone with “an approachable beauty, though she hates being approached.”
The Something sounds like an interesting project, if just for being a comedy set in space, and Byrne is in-demand enough right now that the film has piqued our interest just based on her involvement. She proved in FX and DirecTV’s Damages, the Insidious films and superhero prequel X-Men: First Class that she can do fine work outside of the comedy genre, and that kind of flexibility makes her a hot commodity.
Byrne doesn’t have any other projects lined up at the moment, so The Something should come together for her. The actress is currently filming Spy – formerly known as Susan Cooper – with her Bridesmaids collaborators Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy, and she has a number of movies in post, but nothing on her schedule that has still to roll cameras.
Byrne plays Jason Bateman’s love interest in this September’s This Is Where I Leave You, secretary Grace in December’s Annie, and a character named Justine in the Nick Kroll-led indie comedy Brother’s Keeper. That’s good news for everyone who loved the actress in Neighbors – she’s certainly not stepping away from the big screen anytime soon. And, whatever it turns out to be, The Something will, like every other project Byrne is involved with, undoubtedly benefit from her versatile acting abilities.
