Phil Lord And Chris Miller Say Ninjago Spinoff Will Focus Mainly On New Characters

Phil Lord and Chris Miller will not be back to direct the sequel to The LEGO Movie, and they also won’t be at the helm of the planned spinoff, Ninjago. Despite this, the directing duo are still heavily involved in the franchise and are hard at work on planning where to take it next.

At the moment, we don’t have a whole lot of information on how things will progress in the sequel, or how Ninjago will tie into it all. However, we do know that the spinoff will likely take place in its own self-contained universe, which makes sense and is what most people thought would be the case.

I recently sat down with Lord and Miller in NYC while they were there promoting their new film, 22 Jump Street. I asked them whether or not we could expect to see characters like Emmet pop-up in Ninjago. While they’re not entirely sure just yet, they said that the film will largely follow new characters.

“That’s a good question. We don’t entirely know. The story largely follows characters that are not in The LEGO Movie.”

This makes perfect sense, as the characters from The LEGO Movie are already getting a proper sequel. Still, it would have been nice to see some of them show up in Ninjago as well. However things play out, I’m sure that with Miller and Lord involved, we’re in for another absolutely delightful romp through the LEGO world, and I can’t wait to see where the franchise goes from here.

Tell us, are you happy that the spinoff will be taking place in its own, self-contained universe. Or do you want to see Emmet and the gang appear? Sound off below!
