Between Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 2 and Sony’s Driveclub, racing sim devotees will have a number of options come this holiday season. But despite their console exclusivity and marketing push, there’s a third party challenger that both titles should keep an eye on in their rearview mirror.

Project CARS is being developed and self-published by Slightly Mad Studios, a team consisting of people who previously worked on both the Need for Speed and Test Drive series. Taking a look at the trailer below, it’s easy to see their experience in the racing genre.

In addition to featuring accurate recreations of real world race tracks, and an assortment of real life vehicles that cover a variety of motorsports, the developer of Project CARS has also announced virtual reality headset support for both the Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus. Seeing as Project Morpheus still doesn’t have a release date, and it has been ruled out for a 2014 release, this could very well mean that many people will end up owning their first VR-ready title before they own the headset itself. Putting the horse before the cart, if you will.

Project CARS will be available this November for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U.
