Miis Enter The Arena For Super Smash Bros. Wii U And 3DS

This morning's Nintendo Direct led off with the Nintendo-est franchise of them all, as Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Super Smash Bros. 3DS took to the digital centre stage. This morning’s Nintendo Direct led off with the Nintendo-est franchise of them all, as Super Smash Bros. Wii U  and Super Smash Bros. 3DS took to the digital centre stage. Bringing heretofore unseen levels of self-awareness to the presentation, a mock fight between Nintendo execs Reggie Fils-Aime and Satoru Iwata was actually just the flashy preamble to the newest additions to the Smash roster: Miis.

Introduced by lead game designer Masahiro Sakurai, the player-customizable Miis will be making their debut in both Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Super Smash Bros. 3DS. The player will be able to import their custom Miis into the Smash Bros. arena, and choose between three different fighting styles: the fist-throwing Brawler, a weapon-wielding Swordfighter, or a projectile-spamming Gunner. The Miis will be customizable with 4 of 12 different special moves per class, for a total of 36 unique special moves across all three classes.

Additionally, the demonstration showed off the Wii U version’s RFID support, which will see the platform’s gamepad used as a scanner for Nintendo figurines. The focus then shifted to a montage of the 3DS version, which offered glimpses of a variety of game modes, including a branching overworld, some side-scrolling action and the return of Melee’s Sandbag-smashing mini-game.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS will be launching October 3rd of this year, with the Wii U version launching holiday 2014.
