While outsiders may understandably not see the appeal of a video game version of a popular card game, Magic: The Gathering manages to buck tradition by releasing yearly updates that offer tremendous upgrades from previous titles. The Duels of the Planeswalkers series has garnered praise for its ease of use, online capabilities and unique game modes, but Magic 2015 is shaping up to be the best version released yet.

Many of the new features included in Magic 2015 have been showcased in the latest trailer released at E3, which reveals not only some new additions but also a brand new plot. Fans of the game will recognize Garruk Wildspeaker as one of the numerous Planeswalkers from the game’s lore, and Magic 2015 will find the grizzled beast-master bored of hunting creatures and looking for more dangerous game: other Planeswalkers, including players.

The stories featured in previous games have never quite reached selling point status, but setting Wildspeaker on the hunt for other Planeswalkers will add an interesting twist to the series, especially if he manages to actually hunt any of them successfully. Although the Magic series isn’t quite known for drastic change, this could be the title to change it all.

The trailer, which can be seen below, also gave fans a glimpse of the full deck customization that is finally being offered after years of clamouring for it. AI is being touted as more intelligent, and of course, the newest cards in the series will be available for play in a multitude of extra modes. Whether or not Magic 2015 will be the card game to end them all remains to be seen, but the striking similarities to last year’s edition along with the few but important changes being made this time around promise that it will at least be a memorable journey.

Don’t miss out on the hunt when Magic 2015 hits the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, iPad, Kindle devices and Android later this summer. No PlayStation releases have been announced at this time.
