Take this breaking news with a grain of salt, but according to Nikke Finke, who used to write for Deadline, Warner Brothers has a huge DC film announcement planned for Comic-Con, which include releases for seven films! According to her blog, their planned schedule is as follows:
May 2016:Â Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
July 2016:Â Shazam
Xmas 2016:Â Sandman
May 2017:Â Justice League
July 2017:Â Wonder Woman
Xmas 2017:Â Flash and Green Lantern Team-Up
May 2018:Â Man of Steel 2
Now, none of this has been confirmed, obviously, and is just a rumor for now, but if true, this is GIGANTIC news for the DC universe. Not even Marvel Studios releases three comic book movies in a single year. If this claim is true though, we won’t just be getting Batman V Superman and Justice League in the next couple years, we’ll finally be getting the expanded DC cinematic universe that we’ve been waiting for.
There are some intriguing bits of information that can be gleaned from Finke’s report. First of all, it might be safe to assume now that Dwayne Johnson, who previously teased a role in the DCCU, will somehow be involved in the Shazam film, either as its titular character or as Shazam’s arch-nemesis, Black Adam.
Secondly, a Flash and Green Lantern team-up film would be incredible, and it would be a great way to focus on those characters, re-introduce Green Lantern to the DCCU, and give us something a bit more exciting than a traditional origin story.
We already knew that Sandman was on the way, from David S. Goyer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but didn’t have a date in mind. We also heard that WB wasn’t quite sure about bringing Wonder Woman to the big screen yet, so seeing her name crop up after Justice League is great news.
Lastly, Man of Steel 2 being on the roster means that we will in fact be getting another Superman solo film. Many have complained that Batman has seemingly hijacked the Man of Steel sequel, which has over time turned into a sort of Justice League prequel (as evidenced by the Dawn of Justice subtitle). The fact that Supes will in fact get his own solo film down the line is encouraging news for fans of the character.
This report just went live, and has already caused quite a bit of excitement online. For now, remember that nothing is set in stone and that this may very well prove to be false. However, with Comic-Con quickly approaching, we should know about WB’s plans for the DCCU soon enough.
What do you think of this roster? Does it get you excited for the DCCU after Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice? Let us know in the comments below.
