Lately, it seems that all the news coming out of Hollywood nowadays leans towards the Star Wars way of life, while fans of fellow sci-fi mega franchise Star Trek, have been left with the odd scrap here and there to get them by until the next installment.
Well Trekkies, we finally have a healthy helping of gossip – quite literally from the horse’s mouth. In a recent Humans from Earth podcast (via Badass Digest), newly-instated director Roberto Orci had the following to say about Star Trek 3:
In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.
These quotes should come as a soother for the critics of J.J Abram’s Star Trek: Into Darkness, which – although a fun time at the cinema – had been panned as an inferior copy and paste of the iconic movie, Star Trek: Wrath of Khan.
Now that Orci has taken the reigns over the S.S Enterprise’s future endeavors, it seems we can look forward to something more akin to the original beloved television series. While Abrams was initially praised for its use of time-travel to give his vision a clean slate in terms of Star Trek canon and lore, Roberto Orci seems to be taking the series back to basics … or dare we say it, to boldly go where no man has gone before.
What wonders and trials lie in wait for Kirk, Spock and the rest we don’t know, but hopefully we can expect some of the characters and species we loved from the classic series, with a tad more originality than Wrath of Kh – I mean Star Trek: Into Darkness – offered.
