True Blood Review: “I Found You” (Season 7, Episode 2)

As the final season of True Blood continues, I’ve got to say, as much as I like this show, I had a hard time getting excited for this episode. Don’t get me wrong, last week’s season premiere, “Jesus Gonna Be Here,” was a fine start to the season, but it was far from the exciting and game-changing turn of events that I expected as the series heads into its last batch of episodes.

Instead, it acted as more of an epilogue to last season’s events and set the stage for bigger things to come. Hep-V infected vampires have made their way to Bon Temps, and have already fought and kidnapped a few of its citizens, leaving Sookie, Jason, Andy, and Alcide struggling with the various vampires that are intertwined in their personal lives. Meanwhile, Pam continues the search for Eric, and Tara met the true death, sparking denial and an interest in the supernatural in her mother, Lettie.

This week picks up right where things left off, though there’s a slight side plot that demands discussing first. In fact, it may just end up being the most talked about sequence in the entire show. That’s right, I’m talking about the out-of-left-field love scene between Jason Stackhouse and Eric Northman.

I’m sure this scene will strike up a ton of debate and inspire many fans to hash out some think-pieces about what it could all mean. Frankly, I can’t figure it out myself, and am wondering if its existence was merely some sort of wish-fullfilment for the fans. Were people pining for Jason and Eric to get together? Probably. I don’t keep up with the many “ships” surrounding the fandom of the show, though I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of there being “Jeric” shippers out there who were just dying for two of the series’ biggest heartthrobs to rip each other’s clothes off.

In any case, it happened, and I hope someone out there is happy. I honestly don’t have a problem with it, and am frankly surprised it hasn’t happened yet. We’ve seen an immeasurable amount of sex on this show, between most of the characters in various pairings. So, I guess it was bound to happen at some point. It’s weird that it never comes back again, but my guess is that it just acted as a humorous cold open that will likely lack any sort of sufficient follow-through.
