Alan Taylor is currently filming the latest instalment of the Terminator franchise, which has been tentatively titled Terminator: Genesis. From what we’ve heard so far, the film is neither sequel, reboot, nor remake, and is more of a re-launch that will toy around with some of the time travel mechanics in order to connect to the first film and even share some scenes with it. So, it kind of sounds like a mix of Back to the Future Part II and J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.
Plot details have been kept tightly under wraps, and believe it or not, we’ve never quite been sure what the film is even officially called. Somewhere along the line the “Genesis” subtitle popped up, and everyone just ran with it.
According to Ain’t It Cool News though, “Genesis” actually isn’t part of the title at all. Instead, it will simply be called Terminator. Several of their sources claim that the film’s licensing, merchandise, and tie-in toys are branded with the Terminator title, and that we’ll likely be seeing a bit of the film at Comic-Con this year:
“There’s a few groovy surprises they might spill [at Comic-Con]. I know because people are keeping them from me and teasing me about it.”
A title change like this makes sense, from a franchise re-launch sort of way. Movies like the aforementioned Star Trek, as well as Fast and Furious and Final Destination, have opted for subtitle-less, simpler titles more in line with the first instalment’s moniker, and it’s worked out well for them.
