A Couple’s Retreat Is Not As It Seems In First Trailer For The One I Love

One of the great problems facing modern moviegoers is the tendency of studios to give away the entire plot a film via the trailers. One of the great problems facing modern moviegoers is the tendency of studios to give away the entire plot a film via the trailers. It is refreshing, therefore, to come across a trailer like the latest for The One I Love, which gives so little away that you actually are left wondering just what the movie is about.

As far as I can tell, The One I Love is about a couple (Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss) whose therapist (Ted Danson) suggests that they go away to a vacation house for awhile to work out the kinks in their marriage. The house is not all that it appears to be, however, and things begin to get very surreal for the pair.

The first trailer for The One I Love certainly seems to suggest a lot without revealing much at all about the central plot. There’s something to do with a certain section of the house and the experiences of the couple as they go in and out, but otherwise there’s precious little info to go on. The trailer reveals nothing, but piques the interest. As far as I’m concerned, that’s exactly what a trailer should do.

The One I Love was directed by Charlie McDowell and premiered at Sundance to general acclaim, even though none of the reviewers want to give away the fun. Given that the trailer proclaims this is from the same people who brought us Safety Not Guaranteed, (another film starring Mark Duplass that had more to it than the trailers would suggest), I’m grateful that everyone seems to be practicing some restraint.

The One I Love gets a VOD release on August 1, and a limited theatrical run starting August 22. You can check out the first trailer below and see what you think.
