One of the most side-splitting comedians on the scene today, Amy Schumer has been dominating the small screen since last April thanks to her hilarious Comedy Central sketch series Inside Amy Schumer, and now it may be time for her to make the leap from TV talent to Hollywood star. Schumer previously had a supporting role in the little-seen Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, but Judd Apatow is working with her at the moment on Trainwreck, a comedy conceived as a starring vehicle for Schumer, who also wrote the script.
We don’t know that much about Trainwreck yet (that behind-the-scenes image above is our first look at the film), but it’s set to focus on “a commitment-averse woman trying to get past her self-sabotaging ways.” Schumer reportedly drew from her real-life experiences for the movie, and it covers a lot of the same socially relevant, sexually frank territory that her Inside Amy Schumer has thrived on exploring. Apatow typically writes the films he directs, so the fact that he trusted Schumer’s abilities as a screenwriter enough to sign on for Trainwreck should say something about the quality of the story.
The partnership between Apatow and Schumer has been highly successful, by all accounts. “Most people aren’t that funny — there’s only a few that take it to a higher place,” said Apatow of his star. “She’s insanely funny, and she has stories to tell.” Though it took a little while to hone Trainwreck‘s script, according to the New York Times, Apatow praised Schumer for being willing to turn her caustic gaze on her own life. He added that she’s the fastest writer he’s worked with.
The supporting cast for this comedy just gives us another reason to get excited. Bill Hader co-stars as a love interest for Schumer’s protagonist, and Tilda Swinton, Brie Larson, Daniel Radcliffe, Colin Quinn, Mike Birbiglia, LeBron James and Method Man all have roles.
Trainwreck chugs into theaters on July 24th, 2015.
