Sadly, in a news item we all knew was coming, it has been officially announced that Sony is pushing Cameron Crowe’s untitled Bradley Cooper/Emma Stone romantic comedy from its December 25th release slot to May 29th, 2015. The fact that the project didn’t even have a title (and still doesn’t) didn’t bode well for its chances of sticking to the Christmas release, and the ridiculously crowded state of the cinema this year (currently, we’ve got The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Annie, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Big Eyes, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, Into the Woods, Paddington, Selma and Unbroken all opening in the last two weeks of December) also hinted at the possibility of a move.
The Hawaii-set comedy, which Crowe both penned and helmed, stars Rachel McAdams and Bill Murray in addition to Cooper and Stone. The plot follows Cooper’s military contractor as he returns to work for the Honolulu U.S. Space Program, reconnects with a long-ago love (McAdams) and falls head over heels for a no-nonsense Air Force watchdog (Stone). Meanwhile, Murray appears to be playing the villain of the piece, a mysterious billionaire with suspect intentions. John Krasinski, Danny McBride and Alec Baldwin all have supporting roles.
Rumors about the film, previously titled Deep Tiki, suggest that Cooper’s character’s assignment in Hawaii is overseeing the launch of a weapons satellite, which he eventually has a change of heart about and decides to sabotage. Mystical forces including a talking computer and ancient island spirits apparently also factor into the plot.
Crowe is one of the best ‘feel-good’ directors working today, and he always comes up with something interesting, especially when he’s both scripting and sitting behind the camera. His films’ distinctive mixings of emotional depth and sunny optimism never fail to brighten my day, and I seriously doubt this upcoming project will be any different.
Still without a title, Crowe’s romantic comedy will now open May 29th, 2015.
