James Gunn Talks Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 And Peter Quill’s Father

With Guardians of the Galaxy 2 already announced, all eyes are on writer/director James Gunn to see where he'll take our loveable heroes next. The July 28th, 2017 release date is still a ways away, and Gunn obviously has tons of time to work out the story, but already he's figured out certain pieces of the puzzle that will be imperative to producing a worthy sequel.

With Guardians of the Galaxy 2 already announced, all eyes are on writer/director James Gunn to see where he’ll take our loveable heroes next. The July 28th, 2017 release date is still a ways away, and Gunn obviously has tons of time to work out the story, but already he’s figured out certain pieces of the puzzle that will be imperative to producing a worthy sequel.

In an interview with Empire Online, Gunn revealed that Peter Quill’s parentage (a big mystery in Guardians of the Galaxy) was already worked out well before the first film was made.

“There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics though, I’ll say that much.”

Gunn also commented on Thanos, saying that he still isn’t sure whether or not the big baddie will show up in the sequel.

“He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos… I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He’s used to his loneliness. He’s got some other kids out there. He’s got to look after them. Nebula’s probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like…”

Though he’s being rather tight-lipped about everything (no surprises there), it’s interesting how Gunn hints that Thanos won’t be the “most important thing” in the sequel. Does this mean that the super-villain won’t be appearing again until Avengers 3? And what about his comments regarding Quill’s father? If it’s not the character who it is in the comics, then who could it be?

All will be revealed when Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits theatres on July 28th, 2017. Until then, though, it’s going to be a very, very long two years.
