It’s a mixed bag of renewal/cancellation news today for ABC Family fans. The network recently announced, ahead of Switched at Birth‘s August 18th season finale, that it will be picking up the popular drama (pictured above) for a fourth season. However, it was simultaneously revealed that freshman mystery drama Twisted, which didn’t find success anywhere near the levels of Switched at Birth or the network’s flagship show Pretty Little Liars, has gotten the axe.
Let’s start with the good news first. On the matter of Switched at Birth‘s renewal, ABC Family president Tom Ascheim teased, “Fans will be clamoring for season four and to know what happens with Daphne and Bay after the season three finale next week.” The series focuses on two teens who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. After being reunited with their actual relatives, the teens and parents attempt to overcome the socioeconomic and ethnic differences present in their unlikely new family. It’s expected to return next summer.
Twisted was a darker, harder sell to audiences. It centered on 16-year-old Danny Desai (Avan Jogia), who returns as a pariah to his hometown after being charged with killing his aunt years earlier. The show never took off in the ratings, despite being placed after high-rated Pretty Little Liars. It debuted to 1.2 million viewers in March of last year before finishing its 19-episode rookie run this past April with roughly 800,000 viewers, making its cancellation none too surprising.
