Ahead of the found-footage horror thriller’s release this Friday, Universal has unveiled a red band trailer for As Above, So Below, and the results are… confusing? Disorienting? Freaky? All of the above, sure, but what it isn’t is particularly engaging.

John Erick Dowdle (Devil, Quarantine) is sitting behind the camera, so this one should be good for some jump-scares, but the set-up isn’t particularly appealing. A group of American explorers blunder into the catacombs beneath Paris in search of the fabled Philosopher’s Stone (yes, that Philosopher’s Stone). Needless to say, it doesn’t go particularly well, with the explorers being terrorized by visions of their past and a dark force in the catacombs.

The whole flick looks nauseatingly claustrophobic, and though that’s definitely not up my avenue, there’s certainly an audience for pics like this. The question is, will the rather generic cast of characters in As Above, So Below draw enough people to the theater? Ben Feldman (Cloverfield), Perdita Weeks (TV’s The Tudors) and Edwin Hodge (The Purge) all star, though whether any of them will be recognizable beneath layers of dirt and blood is another question this trailer leaves unanswered.

As Above, So Below opens August 29th. Will you be watching?
