Michael R. Roskam’s latest flick, The Drop (originally titled Animal Control), is set to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend. Judging by the original trailer and these two new clips released today… boy does it look good.
Based on an original script by Dennis Lehane, who penned Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River and Shutter Island, the film takes place in the seedy criminal underworld of New York. Tom Hardy stars as bartender Bob, who makes his living funnelling cash for local gangsters in so-called “money drops” located all across the city’s diviest bars. Needless to say, it all goes mammaries skyward when his cousin Marv (Gandolfini) gets him involved in a robbery.
The pair of clips are a testament to Roskam’s attention to tone. Subtle, nuanced performances and unique shot choices, there’s a hint of Scorsese in there that plays like the best type of homage. They’re brief glimpses at Bob’s daily routines and some neat backstory that’ll no doubt be fleshed out in the feature, and as of now, we’re definitely excited.
The Drop lands in theatres on September 12th.
