Paramount must feel pretty confident about its ill-titled reboot of the Terminator franchise, Terminator: Genisys, as the studio just announced the release dates for two sequels. Simply referred to as Terminator 2 and Terminator 3, they will arrive on May 19th, 2017 and June 29th, 2018, respectively.
Terminator 2 joins a pretty crowded summer in 2017, hitting theaters two weeks after an untitled Marvel Studios film and a week before The LEGO Movie sequel. Its success completely depends on how well Terminator: Genisys is received. Terminator 3 faces an even tougher battle, as it shares its release date with an untitled Fox/Dreamworks Animation film and hits cinemas just a week before another mystery Marvel film.
This release date announcement comes as no real surprise, as the new growing trend in Hollywood is to lay out plans for franchises years in advance, especially with so many tentpoles competing for prime slots. Paramount doesn’t have very many franchises under its roof to fill such slots, so it’s even less surprising that we’ll see Sarah Connor and her son John battle Skynet for years to come.
Directed by Alan Taylor, Terminator: Genisys stars Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke (no relation), Jai Courtney and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It hits theaters on July 1st, 2015.
