Given the groundswell of support for this year’s rather excellent Captain America: The Winter Solider — arguably Marvel’s best film to date, followed by Guardians — many ardent fans have begun speculating as to where Joe and Anthony Russo will take Steve Rogers and co. in the next iteration.

And though it’s still more than a year from release, early reports have suggested that Captain America 3 would focus on the calamitous civil war found in Marvel comics. However, in a recent interview with Desde Hollywood alongside the sequel’s DVD release, the filmmaking siblings poured cold water over the potential storyline.

“It’s complex. There are a lot of characters. Marvel doesn’t have ownership of some of the key players in that. […] I don’t run Marvel, so I can’t say that it won’t happen, but I would say that it is highly unlikely.”

While the arc certainly lends itself to a big screen adaptation, the fact that the studio doesn’t hold the rights to some of the story’s key players — particularly Spider-Man — which means that Captain America 3 will likely venture down a different road come 2016.

Speaking of which, while the upcoming threequel is currently without a subtitle, the Russo brothers went on to reveal that Marvel’s head honcho Kevin Feige has a firm idea of what to label Cap 3, which will reportedly be unveiled to audiences very soon indeed. In fact, it seems as though the subtitle itself has been set in stone in many ways, with Russo stating that Feige has held the idea for close to a decade.

What this is exactly, remains to be seen. Although, if a leaked film slate from Comic-Con is anything to go by, chances are that Captain America 3 will be called The Fallen Son. And, given that the Russo brothers hinted that the next chapter in the franchise will have a similarly massive effect on the MCU as its predecessor, the purported subtitle can’t be too far from the truth.
