Sony Pictures has issued the green light on an I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, according to a report by Deadline.

The 1997 horror flick, which despite being met with unfavourable reviews and countless parodies since release, managed to pull in over $125 million at the worldwide box office, thereby producing two sequels. For this latest retelling, though, the studio has confirmed that the script will be overseen by Mike Flanagan — director of this year’s micro-budget supernatural horror, Oculus — alongside producer Neal Moritz, who served as producer on the original movie seventeen years ago.

At this time, it’s unclear whether Sony wish to recall the cast of 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, including the likes of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar, though it appears as though the company are aiming for a full revision of the IP replete with an all-new band of naive teenagers — and of course, a brand new creepy killer.

The fact that Sony has chosen Mike Flanagan to pen the script indicates that the reboot may curtail its budget, opting for a micro-budget production that appears to go hand in blood-drenched hand with the horror genre of late. With recent releases such as Sinister, the aforementioned Oculus and, to a lesser extent, The Purge all managing to unease audiences across the country on a shoestring budget.

While we have no word of casting at this early stage, sources state that the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot will be fast-tracked ahead of a planned 2016 release. In the meantime, be sure to leave us your thoughts on the planned retelling in the comments section below.
