One of the most notable Hollywood trends of late is the way in which studios have gravitated towards dystopian stories situated within an all-encompassing battle arena. From The Hunger Games to the soon-to-be-released The Maze Runner, it appears as though these productions are channeling a barbaric spectatorship that harkens back to the Roman Empire and the blood-drenched days of the Colosseum.
And the latest project to venture into such a genre is Francesco Cinquemani’s directorial debut, Andron — The Black Labyrinth, which recently added Danny Glover and Alec Baldwin to its cast.
Speaking of the core concept behind the upcoming sci-fi adventure, Andrew Iervolino, AMBI Pictures Group’s producer — the company behind the film — stated that recruiting the likes of Glover and Baldwin only elevate the production to new heights.
“The story of Andron is enough to excite sci-fi fans worldwide but when you add actors like Alec Baldwin and Danny Glover, the meter rises even higher and audiences expect something very special, which is what we plan to deliver. We’re very excited to add this film to our production slate and eager to get to work on a film we believe has great breakout potential.”
It’s too early to call if Andron — The Black Labyrinth will do good on Iervolino’s claims. Adding Danny Glover and Alec Baldwin certainly gives the film a broader appeal, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that Cinquemani’s overly generic project will be shouldered out of the limelight by the final chapter in the like-minded The Hunger Games come release.
Nevertheless, the aforementioned duo will join a cast that includes Jon Kortajarena, Michelle Ryan and Gale Harold. Principal photography on Andron — The Black Labyrinth is set to begin in Malta later this month. In the meantime, be sure to let us know your thoughts on the upcoming sci-fi movie in the comments.
