Speaking on NBC’s Today Show, the 37-year-old actor claimed that the next chapter in the franchise, tentatively labelled as Star Trek 3, is starting to gain traction and that filming will likely begin within the next six months.

“I think it’s on the horizon,” Quinto said on NBC’s Today show. “Things are rumbling, so I have a feeling that we will be in production sometime in the next six months.”

Star Trek 3 will be the first instalment in Paramount’s rebooted series that won’t be helmed by J.J. Abrhams, given that the director is tied up with a certain other sci-fi series that goes by the name of Star Wars Episode VII. Though it is yet to be confirmed, reports suggest that Roberto Orci — co-writer of the previous two entries in the franchise — will step into the directing chair in J.J. Abrhams’ stead.

Speaking of which, Orci himself recently stated that a first draft of the script had been completed, which lends credence to Qunito’s nebulous start date. And while not much is not in terms of story, we understand that the writer-cum-director plans to make Star Trek 3 the one entry in the new franchise that adheres to the original TV show the most.

Currently, Paramount Pictures has pegged Star Trek 3 for a 2016 release date, and we’ll be sure to update you with all the information regarding the Enterprise’s next deep-space adventure as it appears.
