Does David Ayer Have His Eye On The Suicide Squad?

Warner Bros. is really starting to kick their superhero universe into gear. With Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice well into production, and a Justice League movie right around the corner, things are starting to heat up. Not to mention the studio's plans for solo films revolving around characters like Shazam, Aquaman and more. Now, WB is looking to expand even further by getting serious about the long rumored Suicide Squad movie.

Warner Bros. is really starting to kick their superhero universe into gear. With Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice well into production, and a Justice League movie right around the corner, things are starting to heat up. Not to mention the studio’s plans for solo films revolving around characters like Shazam, Aquaman and more. Now, WB is looking to expand even further by getting serious about the long rumored Suicide Squad movie.

This one has been in development for a while now, but until today, we never had any real confirmation on it aside from a few persistent rumors. However, things are now starting to take shape as director David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch) is said to be the studio’s top choice for the director’s chair.

The plan is to tie the film into the existing DC Universe, though how scribe Justin Marks will pull that off is currently unknown. Rumor has it though that Amanda Waller (a character from the Suicide Squad comics who also had several encounters with the Caped Crusader) will have a cameo in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

For those unfamiliar with the property, here’s a description from the Wikipedia page:

The Suicide Squad is an antihero team of incarcerated supervillains who act as deniable assets for the United States government, undertaking high-risk black ops missions in exchange for commuted prison sentences. The group operates out of Belle Reve Penitentiary, under the directorship of Dr. Amanda Waller. Thus, the Suicide Squad’s existence helps to explain why many convicted villains in the D.C. Universe roam free without having heroes tracking them down—until they, inevitably, attempt or commit another crime.

While I don’t know very much about the Suicide Squad, I am a big fan of David Ayer. I love the gritty realism that he brings to his films and I think that his directing style could compliment an “antihero team” like this one quite well. Especially since it sounds like the Suicide Squad are a bit more edgy and darker than your typical superheroes.

Tell us, are you happy to see that Warner Bros. is moving ahead with a Suicide Squad film? Or would you have preferred to see them focus their efforts on another property? And what about David Ayer to direct? Do you back that choice? Sound off below!
