Earlier this month, news broke that The Flash producer Greg Berlanti and No Ordinary Family‘s Ali Adler were pitching a Supergirl TV series to various networks. Now we’re hearing that Superman’s cousin has already found a home, and is jumping over the pilot stage in a single bound.
After only a day of pitching the series to networks, Berlanti and Adler have made a deal with CBS. According to Deadline, Supergirl has found a series commitment in a deal that “eclipses the commitment DC Batman drama Gotham got at Fox last fall.”
Unlike Smallville, which focused on a young Clark Kent learning about his Kryptonian heritage and abilities while on a ten-year journey to becoming Superman, Supergirl will begin with Kara Zor-El at the very beginning of her superhero career.
Here’s the description according to Deadline:
“Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.”
While it may seem a bit surprising for Supergirl to wind up on CBS and not somewhere else that Warner Bros. has a superhero series like, say, the CW, Fox, or NBC, the network has been making a push for more female-led dramas. This year alone we saw Extant, Madam Secretary, and CSI: Cyber join staple series The Good Wife. Plus, Berlanti already sold a show to them earlier this year, titled The Things They Left Behind.
Supergirl is only the latest DC Comics character to head to the small screen. Arrow is currently heading into its third season, while The Flash, iZombie, Gotham, and Constantine are all premiering this fall. As far as upcoming series go, Preacher, Scalped, Lucifer, and Titans are all in various stages of development across several networks.
