Colin Farrell Will Star In Season Two Of True Detective

The growing trend of anthology TV series – in which each season features a different set of characters in a different story – just got a significant boost, as Colin Farrell confirmed his casting in season two of True Detective. The award-winning HBO drama is set to return to our screens in 2015, and while many were disappointed to learn that original stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson would not be returning as repertory players in the style of anthology series American Horror Story, the commissioning of season two left new casting possibilities wide open.

Inspired by the pulp detective fiction genre, True Detective is the creation of writer Nic Pizzolatto. He wrote the entire first season – which consisted of eight episodes – and is expected to do the same for season two. The critically acclaimed first season saw a multiple timeline set-up follow two Louisiana State Police detectives hunt a serial killer over the course of 17 years. Each episode was directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, and co-starred Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts and Tory Kittles.

Speaking to The Sunday World, Colin Farrell – soon to be seen in Miss Julie with Jessica Chastain – announced his True Detective involvement:

“I’m doing the second series. I’m very excited.”

So, what do we know about season two? According to the little information that has been released, the story “looks set to pick up on the vicious murder of a corrupt businessman found dead the night before he completes a deal.” Pizzolatto himself has also previously confirmed that the story will be set in California, though outside of Los Angeles, and will feature three lead characters. Though the creator will once again pen each instalment, it is rumoured that a variety of directors will be taking the helm for season two. Both Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) and William Friedkin (Killer Joe) are among the names in the mix to call episodic shots.

The character to be played by Colin Farrell is named Ray Velcaro, and is described as a man “who has been damaged by trauma in both his personal and professional lives.” One of the other lead roles is that of Frank Semyon – “a former thug-turned-businessman, whose wheeling and dealing gets him into some sticky situations.” Though no official casting announcements have been made, it is rumoured that Vince Vaughn, Elizabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams are all involved.

With Colin Farrell talking to the press, and a production schedule looming, we can expect official information about the second season of True Detective very soon. Casting choices and the appointment of directors are simply the icing on a deeply satisfying cake, however. The real star of this show is Nic Pizzolatto’s incredible scripts. That’s what draws in the talent – both in front of and behind the camera – and that’s what draws in the audience, too. Whoever fills those last lead roles, we know we can strap ourselves in for another season of intense, high quality drama.
