There’s certainly been a lot of water under the bridge since we last heard any news about Calibre Media’s Bone Tomahawk. The violent yarn has been in development for a long while, with Timothy Olyphant and Peter Sarsgaard attached to star at one point. Back in October 2012, Kurt Russell joined the flick, along with Dexter‘s Jennifer Carpenter. Since then, talk on the film has been largely silent. Things are picking back up for the western again, however, as Insidious star Patrick Wilson and Lost alum Matthew Fox have joined the project.
The pair will join the previously-announced Russell, as Sheriff Franklin Hunt, and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor, Six Feet Under) as a man named Chicory. No news on whether Carpenter will return, however.
In what is being termed a brutally violent tale, the film will follow four men who traipse out into the back end of beyond to rescue a group of captives held by a gaggle of nomadic cannibals. They’re not peaceful nomads, they just prefer to live in the middle of nowhere so as to better mask their acquired eating habits.
Wilson is set to play “Arthur O’Dwyer, a thoughtful cowboy whose rise to the foreman position of a cattle outfit is interrupted by an unfortunate accident that reshapes his life in unforeseen ways.” Fox’s part sounds like more a verbose role as he’ll play John Brooder, an “eloquent, albeit inscrutable gentleman whose dark inclinations have put him and his polished weapons at the very edge of the western frontier.” Both actors have numerous titles under the belt that deal with the darker shades of man’s nature. Wilson ventured into The Further more than once for the Insidious franchise, and Fox’s stint on Lost proves he’s got what it takes.
Calling the shots on the horror western is S. Craig Zahler, who’ll make his directorial debut based on his own original screenplay.
Bone Tomahawk is set to start shooting this October.
