If you like your vampire-werewolf action to conform to the highest calibre of cheese, then look no further. The first two trailers for horror action romp, Wolves, have arrived with a distinct whiff of the finest Roquefort.

There’s nothing against a genre pic embracing overused tropes, especially if there’s evidence of self-awareness or a sly nod here and there. Thankfully, that looks to be the case with Wolves.

Written and directed by David Hayter, the film has all the elements in place to secure the title of this fall’s Best Popcorn Flick. The story follows Cayden Richards (Lucas Till), who departs his teenage existence swiftly after he’s considered the chief suspect in his parents’ grisly murder. Arriving in the town of Lupine Ridge (really? that’s almost as obvious as Troll 2‘s Nilbog), he discovers that his “gift” isn’t one he alone holds, as it turns out there’s loads of vicious wolves that are all after a hearty human meal.

Hayter is no stranger to genre, having penned the first two X-Men movies and Watchmen, and the trailers indicate he’s having a blast sending up the quirks of the mode. Both previews look identical to me, despite one apparently being a red band trailer, but you can check them both out below and let us know what you think.

Wolves opens in theatres on November 14th and on VOD November 16th.

Popular high school student Cayden Richards wakes from a horrific nightmare, only to realize that he’s living it… He is changing into something vicious, unpredictable and wild. Forced to hit the road after the brutal murder of his parents, Cayden tries to hunt down the truth of what he is. In the remote, mountain town of Lupine Ridge, he discovers others like him — Including the beautiful Angelina, a young woman caught between two ancient clans of “wolves”. And when he finally discovers the shocking truth behind his ancestry, Cayden realizes there is only one way to save the woman he loves… a grisly fight to the death against forces more savage than he could have ever imagined.
