Amazon Orders Second Season Of Transparent

Even with major networks pulling out ambitious series like Gotham and Gracepoint, the only new show that people are really talking about isn't on television at all. Amazon's hilarious, deeply affecting Transparent, which stars Jeffrey Tambor as Mort/Maura Pfefferman, a man transitioning to become a woman, is by all accounts the biggest breakout of the fall. And now, the tech giant has opted to order a second season, which will air in 2015.

Even with major networks pulling out ambitious series like Gotham and Gracepoint, the only new show that people are really talking about isn’t on television at all. Amazon’s hilarious, deeply affecting Transparent, which stars Jeffrey Tambor as Mort/Maura Pfefferman, a man transitioning to become a woman, is by all accounts the biggest breakout of the fall. And now, the tech giant has opted to order a second season, which will air in 2015.

A second season of the Jill Soloway-created series, which also stars Amy Landecker, Jay Duplass, Gaby Hoffmann and Judith Light, was a no-brainer given the reception and ratings. Transparent holds the distinctions of being both the number one ranked and most binge-watched TV series on Prime Instant Video.

Amazon Studios vice-president Roy Price released an official statement, saying:

“We are absolutely thrilled that the response to Transparent has been so positive. Our goal is to create series that customers love, so it’s great to hear that Transparent has not only risen to the no. 1 series on Prime Instant Video, but that it’s deemed ‘binge worthy’ as well. Given all this great feedback, it only makes sense to bring the Pfeffermans back next year in season two.”

We Got This Covered’s own Sam Woolf extolled the series as “the most insightful and refreshing show of the fall season” and “one of the best of the year” in his review, particularly praising the show’s progressive messages and complex writing.

Transparent is the second Amazon series to receive a second season pickup, behind Alpha House, which will return for its sophomore run later this month. The platform’s lineup will grow immensely over the course of the next year, seeing as Amazon has recently ordered full seasons of Chris Carter’s The After, Bosch, Paul Weitz’s Mozart in the Jungle, Wishenpoof!, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, Ron Perlman starrer Hand of God and Steven Soderbergh’s Red Oaks.
