Outlast 2 Has Entered The Dark Bowels Of Development

Not fans of resting on their blood-drenched laurels, Outlast dev Red Barrel Games began work on a new horror property immediately after wrapping up work on the game’s expansion, Whistleblower. Not fans of resting on their blood-drenched laurels, Outlast dev Red Barrel Games began work on a new horror property immediately after wrapping up work on the game’s expansion, Whistleblower. Up until now, that project was coated in mystery — replete with scratch marks and Occult-like symbols — but Phillipe Morin, co-founder of the studio, revealed that that game is, in fact, Outlast 2.

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, here’s what Morin had to see about the horror sequel, stating that the studio still has more stories to tell in and around the world of Mount Massive Asylum.

“After shipping the XB1 version of Outlast, we took some time to analyse our situation and we quickly realised we had at least another horror game in us,” Morin said. “So, yes, we are working on Outlast 2. We’re still a small indie studio (12 people), so we’ll need a little bit of time to ship our next game, but hopefully it will be worth it.”

For the original first-person game, players were forced to creep gingerly around the halls of the aforementioned and decrepit building as Miles Upshur — an investigative journalist who receives an anonymous tip. Why anyone would want to venture into an abandoned asylum is, quite frankly, beyond us, but it provided a great set-up for what quickly became one of the most critically-acclaimed horror titles of 2014.

Looking ahead to Outlast 2, however, Red Barrel stated that it has a host of fresh ideas for the follow-up, which hints that the studio could take the series to a whole new timeline or location. After all, Outlast: Whistleblower already handled the prequel with aplomb, so here’s hoping the continuation can further explore the ghouls and demons lurking around Mount Massive.

Outlast 2 has officially entered the bowels of development, but don’t hold your breath for a release date just yet, as Red Barrel will require a “little bit of time” considering their relatively small size.
