Sony has announced that firmware 2.0 for PlayStation 4 will be available to download on Tuesday, October 28th.

The long-awaited update is set to introduce a bevy of novel features, including the ability to change the home screen theme, play music via an external USB and, perhaps most importantly, the Share Play functionality.

Initially teased during the PlayStation 4 reveal event back in February of last year, the feature allows players to pass on control of a game remotely to a friend over the Internet. So, whether you’re stuck on a particular level or even a lumbering boss that refuses to keel, you can now get by with a little help from your PSN friends — at least, that’s the idea.

In the official announcement of firmware 2.0, Sony trumpeted Share Play as the next level of social connectivity.

“Let’s go from sitting back and watching friends play to actually jumping into games remotely and sharing great experiences together in real time.”

Finally, the upcoming mandatory patch will also bring in YouTube video support, all the while improving the system’s broadcasting system. Firmware 2.0 will also alter the console’s “What’s New” section slightly, offering up a more dynamic interface so you can see what your fellow PS4 users have been up to.

Firmware 2.0 will be available to download on PlayStation 4 on October 28th. If you want to get ahead of the curve, be sure to leave your console on stand-by come Tuesday as the update will download automatically so it doesn’t interfere with that precious gaming time.
