Now that Oscar winner Christian Bale has walked away from the role of Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic of the Apple founder, Sony is on the hunt for a replacement, and Deadline reports today that the studio is highly interested in snagging none other than Shame star Michael Fassbender for the gig.

Danny Boyle (127 Hours) is already set to direct the pic from a script by The West Wing creator/writer Aaron Sorkin, and their involvement alone already makes the project one to keep an eye on. If Fassbender came on board, though, that would elevate the project to another level. The actor has proven to be one of the most exciting talents working today, between his blockbuster role as Magneto in the X-Men franchise and his grittier performances in films like Shame12 Years a Slave and Frank.

Fassbender’s packed schedule, including The Light Between Two Oceans, Macbeth and an untitled Terrence Malick project, also have many wondering when the actor will finally take home an Oscar statuette (his being snubbed for Shame still irks me, among many others). A biopic about a cultural figure as important as Jobs could be a surefire way for Fassbender to speed up that process.

And though there’s nothing out of his camp yet, the actor does have an opening this winter in between X-Men pics during which he could conceivably squeeze in the Steve Jobs biopic.

We’ll be sure keep you posted as more on Fassbender’s potential involvement develops. But what do you think? Is he a good fit for the part of Steve Jobs? Or do you have another star in mind for the role?
