In a bare-bones report out of Variety, Laura Dern and Judd Apatow are to combine their comedic forces and deliver to the world a female football movie. After Dern came up with the idea about a bunch of obsessive female football supporters, she shared it with Apatow, who’s now in cahoots with the actress on the pic. The untitled project is currently in development over at Universal, with Pam Brady on board to pen the script.

With regards to the story – there’s nothing else to go on except the fact that it’ll be based in the world of footie fans. The very mention of it being a female movie, however, makes the report far more newsworthy. Why? Because there’s simply a dearth of high-quality female comedy roles available. So, the prospect of a leading female cast in a high-profile comedy at Universal bodes well for actresses everywhere. Could this be a sign that the tides are turning, especially in light of the Ghostbusters reboot’s recent gender shift?

Taking that into account, Apatow’s history of trailblazing comedies has always incorporated women into the fabric of the film. Instead of mere supporting romantic interest roles with little to offer, he’s got a habit of writing very funny gags for his female characters. By the looks of things, there’ll likely be a LOT of those, as screenwriter Pam Brady is one the scribes behind TV’s South Park, the feature, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and Team America: World Police.

There might be little to go on right now with Laura Dern and Judd Apatow’s latest pic, but it looks like it’s gonna be funny as hell.
