Johnny Depp Layers On The Spoof In New Trailer For Mortdecai

Johnny Depp's transition from a serious actor to parody player is still continuing to develop. From his over-the-top pirate, a hyperbolic Native American and lest we forget the stream of caricatures he's happy to keep rolling out for Tim Burton, there's no stopping this next chapter in his acting career. For his next over-the-top role, he'll be adding the title of "part time to rogue" to his resume in this winter's bumbling comedy, Mortdecai.

For David Koepp’s screwball chucklefest, Depp is perfectly cast as an art dealer tasked with jet-setting around the globe to locate a missing painting. The artwork in question allegedly contains the whereabouts to a hidden trove of Nazi treasure, so, he’s on a quest to find this untold wealth of gold bars.

In the first initial teaser which debuted earlier this year, the emphasis was firmly on the show-don’t-tell angle. Instead of spelling out the entire plot, it opted to tantalize and offer up an idea of the film’s action comedy tone.

In this latest trailer, we continue to unravel the comedic elements which are furthered by the introduction of the main supporting players. Almost every member of the cast adopt high society English accents and embark on terribly lofty English pastimes, placing the film into the realms of a silly Austin Powers-influenced spoof.

In the snippet above we’re greeted by Gwyneth Paltrow as his wife, Ewan McGregor as his helper, and Paul Bettany as the thuggish muscle. In spite of its heavy emphasis on goofy fish-out-of-water gags, Koepp’s comedy looks as though it might tickle quite a few ribs this coming winter.

Mortdecai opens on January 23rd, 2015.

Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.
