THR is reporting that Shailene Woodley is eyeing the female lead in Oliver Stone’s upcoming Edward Snowden film, which is currently without a title. Should she sign on, the actress would star as Snowden’s girlfriend, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing the NSA whistleblower.

Based on two different novels, Luke Harding’s The Snowden Files and Anatoly Kucherena’s upcoming Time of the Octopus, Stone’s untitled pic will head into pre-production in Germany this January and will undoubtedly cause some controversy upon release. Although, that’s hardly a surprise given the director’s history for speaking his mind and making his political views known through his films.

As for Woodley, as much as I like seeing her in stuff like Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars, taking on a role in a more mature and adult-oriented project like this is definitely the right move to make. She’s one of Hollywood’s fastest rising stars and as much of a draw as she is to the Young Adult crowd, it would be smart to diversify her filmography and take on more grown up roles.

Tell us, are you happy to see a talented young actress like Shailene Woodley board Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden film? Sound off below and let us know!
