Love him or hate him, Mel Gibson never makes wimpish decisions when it comes to the work. He’s handled a variety of opposing epochs, viewpoints and styles in his directorial duties. In front of the camera, he’s demonstrated a capability for comedy, drama and action. So, professionally, while his efforts may be divisive, you can’t question his unfettered commitment to film. Whether his highly-publicized private life holds any sway over your perception of him, may affect how intrigued you are by his next project – Hacksaw Ridge.
According to Deadline, the Aussie is in very, very early negotiations to direct the tale about a U.S. Army Medic who served in World War II. Based on the true story of Desmond Doss, the film will orbit the life of the medic who refused to kill during the Battle of Okinawa. His actions were later rewarded as he was granted the Congressional Medal of Honour by President Truman.
It’s an emotionally-heavy premise, which makes this a surefire winner for Gibson. His past jaunts behind the camera have resulted in many unique approaches to infamous moments in history. If he takes the gig, he will be reunited with his Braveheart writer, Randall Wallace, who’s already penned the script.
However, don’t get overexcited, as Deadline went on to say: “This is not a done deal yet… talks are moving forward delicately and slowly.” So, we shouldn’t take it as gospel. Add on to that, the fact that Gibson might be directing Andrew Garfield in the leading role and it’s kinda hard not to. After his stint as the webhead extraordinaire, the British actor is turning to more dramatic fare of late. Word is his performance in 99 Homes is a brilliant turn, that’ll be followed up by his appearance in Martin Scorsese’s Silence. If Walden Media can iron out the creases in negotiations, Hacksaw Ridge might finally get on the move. After all, it has been in development for thirteen years.
