We’ve known for some time that Josh Boone’s The Stand — Warner Bros.’ long-gestating adaptation Stephen King’s seminal tome — would span more than one film in its transition from novel to screen, but in a recent interview with Kevin Smith on Hollywood Babble-On, the Fault in Our Stars helmer revealed that the adaptation would stretch to no less than four movies.
Here’s what Boone had to say on the matter:
“We’re going to do four,” Boone told Kevin Smith, “and we’re going to do The Stand at the highest level you can do it at, with a cast that’s going to blow people’s minds. We’ve already been talking to lots of people, and have people on board in certain roles that people don’t know about…”
It’s intriguing that Boone has cast key roles at this early stage. Last we heard, the studio had been circling the likes of Matthew McConaughey and Stuck in Love‘s Nat Wolff for roles in the ambitious adaptation. Still, by and large, this a project still shrouded in a very King-esque mystery. But hey, at least fans can look forward to a fully-fledged series.
And though it’s easy to assume that the director is in fact spreading his visualization too thin, an adaptation of The Stand was always going to be epic in scope. First published in 1978, King’s post-apocalyptic tale runs close to 800 pages in length — and it’s this immense scale that has kept the project from stepping before the cameras for so long. Now, though, Warner Bros. is beginning to get the ball rolling, and it’s understood that production will get underway in the first half of 2015.
