Director Matthew Vaughn is compiling a hefty back catalogue of solid genre pics. From the brash and unapologetic Kick-Ass, to the fun-packed X-Men: First Class, his signature style suggests that fun overrides any po-faced seriousness the story may contain. Another entry that will soon be added to that resume is his upcoming spy romp, Kingsman: The Secret Service.
The adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic comes across as part-spoof, part-homage. Its main influence appears to stem from the Bond canon – with one notable twist. Instead of casting a ripped, rugged beefcake-type, Vaughn has opted to install Colin Firth as his leading man.
In the film, the English actor plays a veteran spy for a secret organization called Kingsman. His role has him recruiting potential new talent for the company, which is where he stumbles upon a young lad on the streets (played by Taron Egerton). Drafting him into the organization is a perfect way to introduce us to their practices – a tactic used heavily in the first trailer.
Whereas in this preview, the jokes and nods are revved up, and we’re given a brilliant look at Samuel L. Jackson’s token bad guy. Sadly, the trailer is not available to embed, so if you want to check it out, head on over to Empire Online, where it debuted this morning.
Kingsman: The Secret Service opens in the UK on January 29th 2015, followed by a US release on February 13th 2015.
