On the back of a report from Bloody Disgusting, we might now know why Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse Productions decided to shift the fifth instalment in their annual spook franchise from its regular Halloween slot to next spring. According to the horror outlet, the next chapter in the demon series, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, has apparently been granted a 3D release.

Currently in production, The Ghost Dimension has long-time series editor, Gregory Plotkin in the director’s chair and franchise newbies, Project Almanac‘s Jason Pagan and Andrew Stark, penning the script. It’s possible that the unique elements required for the ‘ghost dimension’ were a key factor in the decision to render the pic in 3D. Per Bloody Disgusting, the plan is to shoot the film digitally before converting it to 3D in post-production.

Aside from the subtitle, which was announced back in September along with the release change, there are a couple of rumours circling the much-awaited sequel.

Firstly, we understand that the film will revolve around a new family being haunted by a demon. This sounds somewhat similar to PA4, which involved a family that were seemingly unconnected to any former franchise characters – until that was spun on its head at the end. Second of all, it’s apparently touted to hook into last year’s Christopher Landon-directed spin-off Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. This backs up what Landon and series producers Oren Peli and Jason Blum have in store for the future of the franchise, as all three have previously mentioned the plan to tie together all the entries.

If The Ghost Dimension is aiming to ramp up the gimmickry with a 3D release, then what can we expect in those future instalments? Some sort of scratch and sniff tech, hopefully.

With production in full swing, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is still scheduled to hit theatres on March 13th, 2015.
