Skynet Fights Back In First Trailer For Terminator: Genisys

Earlier this week, a sinister live-motion poster depicting a disintegrating endoskeleton permeated the Internet. The next day, a brief 15-second tease flashed hints of the live-action rumblings of a future Earth decimated by an evil sentient robot race. Now, after months of anticipation, Paramount and Skydance have finally unleashed the first full-length trailer for Terminator: Genisys.

Earlier this week, a sinister live-motion poster depicting a disintegrating endoskeleton permeated the Internet. The next day, a brief 15-second tease hinted at a future Earth decimated by an evil sentient robot race. Now, after months of anticipation, Paramount and Skydance have finally unleashed the first poster and full-length trailer for Terminator: Genisys.

The first instalment in a whole new trilogy, Genisys is being heralded as a “reset” for the man-versus-machine franchise. Unlike the sequels which followed James Cameron’s original series – The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day – Alan Taylor’s reboot will offer fans a fresh look at an alternate timeline.

Set to follow Emilia Clarke’s Sarah Connor, the story is anchored in Terminator lore of old… and then splinters into a new direction. This time, little Sarah grows up with the Schwarzenegger T-800 ‘bot entering her life at a much earlier stage; the effects of which cast butterfly effect ripples across the entire timeline. The knee-jerk critical reaction to this narrative change has been somewhat divided. But, really, taking a risk and spinning a unique angle on the once-trendsetting but now-tired series, is what made the best entries of the franchise so timeless.

For a first look at how director Alan Taylor and writers Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier have invigorated the story, kick back, relax and watch the trailer above. Then let us know – who do you think will win the war?

Poised to introduce a whole new generation to the war between man and machine, Terminator: Genisys will storm into theatres on July 1st, 2015.

The beginning of Terminator: Genisys, the first of three planned films that Paramount hopes will relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise, is set in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.
