Boyhood Named Best Picture By Los Angeles, New York, And Boston Film Critics

Today saw the Los Angeles Film Critics Associate, the New York Film Critics Online, and the Boston Film Critics Association all announcing their year-end awards, with all three groups concurring that Richard Linklater's Boyhood is the best film of 2014. The movie also received Best Director from all three groups, in addition to Best Actress and Best Editing from Los Angeles, Best Supporting Actress from New York, and Best Screenplay (tied with Birdman), Best Editing, and Best Ensemble from Boston. As predicted, it's looking like Linklater's incredible film is going to be the favorite throughout awards season (a la The Artist and 12 Years a Slave).

Today saw the Los Angeles Film Critics Associate, the New York Film Critics Online, and the Boston Society of Film Critics all announcing their year-end awards, with all three groups concurring that Richard Linklater’s Boyhood is the best film of 2014. The movie also received Best Director from all three groups, in addition to Best Actress and Best Editing from Los Angeles, Best Supporting Actress from New York, and Best Screenplay (tied with Birdman), Best Editing, and Best Ensemble from Boston. As predicted, it’s looking like Linklater’s incredible film is going to be the favorite throughout awards season (a la The Artist and 12 Years a Slave).

Looking at the rest of today’s winners, there’s nothing particularly surprising other than Tom Hardy receiving Best Actor from Los Angeles for Locke over several of the top candidates (Michael Keaton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, etc.), and the same group giving Supporting Actress to Agata Kuleszka for Ida. Aside from those, we’re seeing much of the same, including J.K. Simmons continued dominance over the Best Supporting Actor category for his outstanding performance in Whiplash (a pick that all three groups agreed on) and Emmanuel Lubezki taking all three Best Cinematography awards for his brilliant work on Birdman (a film that was made to appear as if it was one long take).

Even with all of these announcements today, awards news this week is hardly over. Coming up tomorrow we have the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association (a group I’m proud to say I’m a member of) announcing their picks, and later in the week, even bigger news as the Screen Actors Guild (Wednesday morning) and Golden Globe (Thursday morning) nominations are announced, so be sure to check back then to see the results.
