Starz’s new mystery series The Missing is pulling a True Detective. After the show’s first season received widespread critical acclaim (including Golden Globe nominations for best miniseries and best actress in a miniseries for Frances Conroy), the premium cable network has opted to pick it up for a second season of 8 episodes, which will feature a new case, new characters and a new location.

No specifics about the second season have been announced, and it’s unknown if Conroy or any other actors from the first season will be returning in new roles (seeing as The Missing is much more grounded than the campy American Horror Story, I’d guess not). The Missing‘s first 8 episodes focused on a father (James Nesbitt) devastated by the disappearance of his young son during a family vacation in France, who spends years searching for him at the high cost of his marriage (to Conroy’s character).

Writers and exec-producers Harry and Jack Williams will be returning in the same capacity for season 2. New Pictures’ Willow Grylls, Charlie Pattinson and Elaine Pyke, BBC’s Polly Hill and Playground’s Colin Callender will also exec produce The Missing going forward. Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik released an official statement announcing the renewal, which read:

“The remarkably talented Williams brothers crafted a beautifully complex and heart-wrenching story with The Missing and while the story, character and locations will be different in this new iteration, we anticipate the same captivating longform storytelling and character development that critics and viewers have responded so well to. We have been thrilled with the critical response and look forward to continuing our terrific collaboration with the BBC, New Pictures and Playground Entertainment.”

With The Missing‘s renewal, it joins a lineup of exceptionally promising scripted series for Starz, including Black Sails, Da Vinci’s Demons, Power, Outlander, Flesh and Bone, Survivor’s Remorse, Blunt Talk, The Girlfriend Experience, The One Percent and Evil Dead.
