Following its premiere at Sundance this year, The Voices hit the festival circuit and bagged a cloud of mixed reviews. In spite of its calamitous debut, the scattered horror comedy has at last been granted a simultaneous VOD and theatrical U.S. release date. Along with that, a couple of new images have made their way online to remind us of how eccentric this film truly is.
Directed by Persepolis‘ helmer Marjane Satrapi, The Voices is all about Ryan Reynolds’ everyman Jerry. He works hard at his 9-5 gig in a bathtub factory and is in desperate need of a date. With the assistance of his court-appointed shrink (Jacki Weaver), he plucks up the courage to ask out Fiona (Gemma Arterton), the office hottie. Things take a turn for the worse, however, as evidenced by this crop of new pics.
With a cracking cast, featuring It-girl Anna Kendrick, it’s a shame that the majority of critical chatter has been so negative on this one. Our own Dominic Mill caught the flick in April. For his review, he issued it a three-star rating before summarizing the following:
“It’s a film that works worst when it asks you to take it seriously, and works best when it doesn’t, but never fails to provide heapings of bloody and completely out-there entertainment. When a film is this deliriously odd, who really needs coherence?”

Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) is that chipper guy clocking the nine-to-five at a bathtub factory, with the offbeat charm of anyone who could use a few friends. With the help of his court-appointed psychiatrist, he pursues his office crush (Gemma Arterton). However, the relationship takes a sudden, murderous turn after she stands him up for a date. Guided by his evil talking cat and benevolent talking dog, Jerry must decide whether to keep striving for normalcy, or indulge in a much more sinister path.
